Modelling grid field intensity with oscillating Gaussian random fields

The CfS awarded funding to an interdisciplinary team between the Centre for Statistics and the Centre for Brain Discovery Sciences.

Research Team: Ioannis Papastathopoulos, Finn Lindgren, Klara Gerlei and Matthew Nolan

Project Summary: One of the most important unsolved problems in science today is to understand the codes that neurons in our brains use to communicate with one another and, collectively, to generate phenomena such as perception and cognition. Approaches to this problem are limited by our ability to analyze neural codes. In this feasibility study we propose the development of a completely novel approach to modelling the patterns of neural firing that are important for spatial cognition (Moser & Moser 2013) and perhaps, for abstract conceptual knowledge (Constantinescu et al. 2016).
